At this year’s ITS European Congress in Istanbul, the boostEDIC M&L project was presented as a key initiative supporting the development of a more connected, efficient and data-driven European transport system, alongside the future European Digital Infrastructure Consortium for Mobility and Logistics (EDIC M&L).
The session, organised by Dr. Eusebiu Catana (ERTICO – ITS Europe), explored how sharing and coordinating mobility data across Europe can improve transport efficiency, enable cross-border services and strengthen system integration. In this context, the EDIC M&L is expected to play a pivotal role by supporting Member States in building and managing shared digital infrastructure for mobility and logistics.
A central theme of the discussion was the importance of mobility data spaces, which bring together public authorities, Member States and private stakeholders to securely share and use data. At the same time, key challenges remain, including the need for interoperable systems, stronger governance frameworks and more effective data integration. Establishing common standards and trusted frameworks was highlighted as essential to unlock the full value of data.
The need for a dedicated EDIC for Mobility & Logistics was further highlighted by Jon Kuiper (Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management), who underlined that while pilot projects are essential to test innovative solutions, they often remain limited in scope and duration. A more structured, long-term approach is needed to ensure continuity, scalability and cross-border interoperability.
Within this landscape, boostEDIC M&L plays a central role in enabling implementation. As highlighted by Stefanie Federl (acatech), the project supports the creation of the future EDIC M&L by contributing to the development of its governance model, fostering collaboration between public and private stakeholders, and building synergies with existing initiatives, including the European Mobility Data Space (EMDS).
By addressing fragmentation and supporting the uptake of data sharing practices, boostEDIC M&L helps move from isolated pilot projects towards scalable, real-world deployment. Through its activities, the project contributes to establishing the foundations for a more interoperable, resilient and sustainable mobility data ecosystem across Europe. The discussions in Istanbul highlighted a clear transition from experimentation to implementation, with boostEDIC M&L acting as a driving force in this process.
In parallel, the project was also showcased at the ERTICO European Pavilion within the exhibition area, where participants had the opportunity to engage directly with the initiative, gain insights into its objectives and activities, and explore its role within the broader European mobility data ecosystem.
